Merging industry with the arts and coinciding with Mayworks Windsor 2012, a two person exhibit of works by artists Collette Broeders and Julia Crampsie will be held at InspectX.

“Industrial Passages: A Worker Dwells Here” follows the journey of the worker through movement in industrial spaces. During the past two years, artist Collette Broeders collected and traced patterns of movements in the manufacturing sector that include rust stains and marks of evidence of the worker left behind. They become a methodical collection of markings culminating from an ongoing journey offering an opportunity to contemplate the spaces. The drawings form images that reflect map-like metaphors of the journey of the worker. The transparent images are layered providing an indexical view of the passage of labour for countless workers. The images revitalize forgotten spaces of empty factories and those left behind in the wake of economic downturns and urban decay.

This idea of revitalization or regeneration is central to my work as an artist. In researching and exploring work spaces, I am struck by the hard working character of the people coming and going to the numerous factories within this mixed-use urban area. This revitalization also facilitates interaction between artists and workers to build a greater understanding of one another and their community.

Artcite collaborates with the MayWorks Windsor committee to develop a new and relevant activist themed exhibition for each MayWorks Windsor celebration, highlighting issues of labour and the Arts. Our 2012 exhibit features the Windsor ON collective GO HOME’s installation “The Break Room”; the “Occupy Windsor Documentation Project” and video histories of “Occupy Windsor” participants.

With the permission, support and participation of Occupy Windsor, Collette Broeders and Alana Bartol present “Occupy Windsor Documentation Project”, a multi-media installation that includes various artifacts from the Occupy Windsor camp, mixed-media drawings, video and sound. The exhibit examines the oral stories collected from the camp as well as the unique methods of communication used by Occupy Windsor and Occupy movements worldwide. Though this exploration, Bartol and Broeders evoke the power of nonverbal systems of communication that resonate within resistance groups as well as members of the wider community.

Teresa Carlesimo and Michael DiRisio (GO HOME collective) present their installation; “The Break Room” – a typical workspace break room, constructed within the gallery: a room that is completely furnished and appears to be a fully functional break room, but without a door or entry way. Without an entrance the room will be physically unreachable, but visible through Plexiglas windows We have created a break room as a place that exists only in the context of wage labour, yet is not a place of labour. Instead, it is a place for the time spent between labouring. It’s a non-place. A place that is often cold and inhospitable. A place that rarely offers the respite that is promised by a “break”. As well, by transforming a section of the gallery space into a break room, we are effectively transforming the surrounding area into a workspace.

For MayWorks 2012, Windsor Ontario’s labour and arts communities join with other cities across Canada to present our third annual MayWorks festival in Windsor, celebrating Labour, Arts and Community. Artists, workers, and students have met over many months to organize a collection of exhibitions, projects, events, a rally and a parade, to celebrate our creativity as a community, our dedication to the values of workers’ solidarity, social justice and human rights.

Collette Broeders is participating in Re: Green’, a juried exhibition featuring work in all media with a focus on Ecological and Sustainability themes at the Martha Gault Art Gallery.

JUROR: Jeff Schmuki
Jeff Schmuki was born in Phoenix Arizona. His installations, interventions, and collaborations foster discussion and generate action in the area of ecological awareness by linking environmental issues to a diverse array of creative operations and tactics. Most recently, Jeff has completed projects at the American Academy of Rome, Seoul Art Space Geumcheon in South Korea, and the Goethe Institute of Cairo, Egypt. Schmuki’s work has also exhibited in many group exhibitions including, Terra-Cotta, Primitive Future (2011) at the Clayarch Museum in Gimhae, South Korea; Lift Off: Earthllngs and the Great Beyond (2011) in the Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University – in Newark, New Jersey; Work Makes the Work (2011) in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln; and The Edge of the Universe (2010) at the Shepparton Art Gallery in Victoria, Australia.

His work can be found in collections of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., lncheon World Ceramic Center in lncheon, South Korea, and the Museo W Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza, Italia. Schmuki is the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner (2007) and Joan Mitchell (2006) Foundations and was recently a visiting artist at Auburn University.

Along with national and international artists, Collette Broeders is participating in “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” at the The Lunch Box Gallery from March 10th to April 7th, 2012.

The Lunch Box Gallery is a small but vibrant and cutting edge photography space located in the popular Wynwood Art District of Miami. About the exhibition’s concept
For the show “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs”, The Lunch Box Gallery is aiming to explore the social phenomenon of iPhoneography as a personal tool globally used to generate visual content, be shared and therefore, communicate. Here, the images many times meticulously conceived, some others more intuitively taken – yet all intentionally post-produced – are intended as mirrors of the user’s everyday life; a visual diary of the individual that can become an open book to their interests, curiosities, ideas, intimacy or even artistic take.

As an enabler for creative communication, iPhoneography has become a new medium for massive dialog, where images taken and edited with the iPhone are openly shared, sometimes instantly and some other times preceded by a complex creative process; regardless, is undeniable that all of these images project a part of the user’s self.

The exhibition “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” as a whole will be an integral, heterogeneous and diverse expression of that avalanche of pixels that are being registered and shared in modern times; yet, in this immensity, every picture in the show becomes a window, a glimpse of the iPhoneographer’s vision, sensitivity and everyday life.

“iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” is inspired by Chase Jarvis famous quote “The Best Camera is the One That’s With You” ™.

All three artists in the exhibition share an interest in mapping and cataloging aspects of shifting environment, memory and experience. All three approaches differ as do their treatments through medium, but all revolve around managing and understanding time and space in relation to themselves as observer or protagonist.

Despite these similar theses, the outcomes produced and developed through their projects diverge widely, illustrating an individual intent and temperament. For the audience, the collective encounter with these works promises to be a rich and varied journey.

Collette Broeders
With Memory Specimans, Broeders negotiates the margins of abstraction integrating personal histories into universal themes of identity, culture and memory. The reanimation of objects and recollections of childhood into her work serve to provoke the viewer into revisiting narratives and fragments of their own identity and recollections.

Collette Broeders is a passionate mixed media artist merging traditional processes with new media. She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. In the 80′s she attended St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology followed by the University of Windsor for business studies and worked in accounting and database development for several years. By 2004, Broeders returned to the University of Windsor where she completed the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Her studies focused on printmaking and investigated the digital realm where she combined both of these mediums. She is an active member of the arts community and maintains a studio in Oldcastle, Ontario, Canada.

Catherine Farrell
Born in Saskatchewan and growing up in northern Ontario, Farrell connected early to prairie skies and vast stretches of space. Recalling frequent childhood road trips, she still finds comfort in the hypnotic calmness of landscape rolling past a vehicle window like a movie.

Farrell’s print, A New Order is a continuous, 47 ft-long print on a bolt of material inspired by a bull fight she witnessed and a recent road trip across Spain. This single, remarkable print was created specifically for the long brick wall in the Arts Centre.

Upon graduating in 2008 with a fine arts degree from McMaster University, Farrell has continued to develop her artistic skills and printmaking experience while working at the Ottawa School of Art. There she maintained and improved their studio facilities. She has attended printmaking conferences including the Southern Graphics Conference CommandPrint 2008 in Richmond, Virginia and Printopolis 2010 in Toronto. Farrell travels regularly to Toronto’s Open Studio to take advantage of their large scale printmaking presses. Her home studio is in Ottawa and she is working toward attaining an MFA, specializing in print media.

Andrzej Maciejewski
Maciejewski’s photographic works are documentaries of places, changing over time. His clinical technique serves, ironically, to render images that are brimming with both narrative and humanity.

The 36 framed photos that comprise Weather Report tell the story of the single view taken from a specially constructed climate-controlled, walk-in camera. This kind of voyeuristic surveillance, of Maciejewski’s own house, sitting on a quiet country road in the middle of nowhere, is captured in every detail that a split second across days, weeks and seasons can reveal. He then dutifully and meticulously adds that moment to his records and weather report.

Andrzej Maciejewski lives in Yarker, Ontario with his wife and family.

Maciejewski has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the US and Europe and his work has been published in a broad selection of periodicals and reviews over the past 20 years.

Artists from all of Ontario were invited to submit art works for inclusion in the 2011 Juried Exhibition. Over 200 works were received and reviewed by juror David Bobier. Applications came from as far north as Latchford, south from Amherstberg; east from Ottawa, and many towns and cities in between.

Twenty artists were chosen to participate and twenty-seven works will be on display during the exhibition.
