The series of Synchronicity drawings investigate symmetrical, repetitive motion using my body as an instrument to form a rhythmic pattern of line. Inspired by the duality of yin and yang of the I Ching, I execute the drawing with a balance of synchronous motion of opposing line. The drawing is performed in a hypnotic tempo and meditative state that manifests itself into physical form to unite the viewer with the intimacy of the experience.
The drawings begin with intense spontaneous gestures within a small space that replicate, synchronize and divide and gradually swell and burst to the outwardly extended body. Like a cell dividing, the internal self-generating energy of the process is bilaterally and equally distributed as the image grows. Ultimately, the drawing becomes a study of contrast showing the peaceful-chaotic, soothing-painful and joyful-desperate moments of the performance.
The “Binary Translation” series are also live performance drawings however integrate, audio of binary translations of various historical and political texts as well as dictionary definitions. They are performed until the repetition of their coded transcripts is complete. The use of binary is derived from the digital world of communication and enables me to extract the function of language to transform it visually. The ones and zeros of binary comprise letters of the alphabet, forming words with meaning and information that when performed become an algorithm for visual language. The “Binary” drawings are executed synchronously to audio of “zeros” and “ones” through the systematic sequence of movements allowing the process of repetition to act as a conduit for the performance.
The drawings are performed in private and public space and examine the limitations of the body with continuous motion over several hours until a state of exhaustion is reached.
