Janzen+Broeders

Ed Janzen and Collette Broeders have been collaborating since 2020 producing large scale drawings and video work in studio, public spaces, along with residencies at Pelee Island and Campbellville, Canada. Their ongoing project ‘Dialogue’ has been presented and performed at galleries in Windsor and Toronto. Janzen+Broeders’ individual practices connect through varying approaches to walking, drawing and performance.

Janzen+Broeders collectively formed in late 2020 after producing their first large scale drawing in studio. The drawing, “Dialogue: Drawing No. 1” became the impetus for how they would approach future work. It was produced using a set of predefined rules that would not determine what the drawing would become but, rather how it would be guided. The first set of rules were: 1) Speak
in one-word sentences; 2) Wear black; and 3) Make marks.

Following their initial collaboration, all subsequent drawings and performances would instill a set of three rules unique to each work. These rules would Influence a continuum of performative exchanges, revealing an ongoing dialogue of text, movement, and mark-making. The core of all rules is the underlying statement:
‘trust the process.’
